Village Wide Special District for Garbage/Trash & Recyclable Pickup for residents

Dear Residents,

Upper Brookville plans to establish a village wide special district for garbage/trash & recyclable pickup for residents in the first quarter of 2017. Bids are due March 17th. Soon thereafter a letter describing the price, schedule and rules will be sent to all residents, after which you will have 60 days to elect in writing to “opt out”. We anticipate pickups will commence the first week in July.

The initiative is more fully described in the Minutes of the September 19th Board of Trustees Meeting, posted on the village website here: September 19, 2016 Board of Trustee Minutes.

We understand that UB residents are being requested to sign 2 year contracts with their private carters. You are free to sign these contracts. However, you should be aware that this will obligate you to use your private carter after the special district is formed and functioning.

Note that by Resolution of the Board of Trustees on December 19, 2016, the date to “Opt Out” has been deferred past year end 2016 to the date which is 60 days after the date residents are notified the final bid price, pickup schedule and terms.

We have approximately 500 homes in Upper Brookville. Our neighboring Village, Matinecock, has village trash collection for their 250 homes. If the winning bid is similar to neighboring Matinecock, the cost per home should be in the range of $40-45 per month and no sales tax charged.

The purpose of email is not to dissuade you from signing a contract with your carter.  It is merely to alert all residents on the formation of this special Village District, so that you will be an informed resident on the consequences of signing long term contracts with a private carter when asked to do so.

Please call Village Clerk/Treasurer Tracy Lynch if you have any questions.

Best regards,

Elliot Conway
Mayor
